My story
"You mean I can do this?"
When my son was seven, he woke up on his birthday crying because he was supposed to wake up a girl that day. I gave them a loving, reasonable answer, and they stopped telling me for three years.
When they were ten, it came back to the surface as a suicide note. I sat on the edge of their bed and told them, "We will figure this out." They looked at me and asked, "You mean I can do this?" I said yes.
Then I went downstairs and fell apart. The next morning I kept everything looking normal for everyone else while I was dying inside.
The person who got me through it didn't have answers. She listened, she stayed, and she told me I was doing it right. That's what I offer you.
